Corporate lesson - from Panchthantra

Everyone knows that we Indians invented the zero. Without zero and the decimal number system, writing and calculating really large numbers would be very difficult.

 

This would be awful for people in the financial industry, whose work depends on having really big salaries. Fortunately Brahmagupta came to their rescue.

 

Another thing which is crucial to the financial services industry is the concept of being too big to fail, which has been put to good use by Citigroup, Bear Stearns, and Goldman Sachs over the past few years in sucking money from American taxpayers. This beautiful concept was also invented by an Indian - Vishnu Sharma, the author of the Panchatantra, in the story of the Weaver and the Chariot Maker.


The story of the weaver and chariot maker is one of the Panchatantra stories that usually doesn't make it to primary school textbooks or Amar Chitra Katha, mostly because it's full of sex, war, and moral hazard. Since you probably haven't read it, here's a quick summary.


A weaver sees a princess during a festival and falls in love with her. As a weaver, he has no chance of marrying her, so he sinks into depression. His friend, a chariot maker decides to help him out. He designs a flying chariot in the shape of Garuda, dresses the weaver up as Vishnu, and tells him to fly the chariot into the princess's room, tell her that he is Vishnu and wants to marry her Gandharva Syle. That is, the wedding is kept a secret from everyone except the princess and the faux-Vishnu. The princess agrees, and the weaver comes back every night to his wife.


Eventually, the maids notice that the princess is spending her days in total bliss, suspect that she's in love, and tell the King. The King asks her what's going on, and she tells him that she's married to Vishnu himself. The King is absolutely delighted, and decides that there's no point in paying tribute to the Chakravarti (Emperor) now that Vishnu himself is on the kingdom's side. The next night, he catches the weaver as he enters the princess's room and asks him to fight the Chakravarti' s army.

The weaver is horrified. Pretending to be Vishnu was fine when it allowed him to make sweet, sweet love to the princess, but taking on the role of Vishnu to face an imperial army single-handed is another thing altogether. On the other hand, if he confesses to the King that he is not actually Vishnu and has been boinking the princess under false pretenses for the past month, he will have his head chopped off. So he decides to get on to the battlefield and do the best job he can, while the King is whipping up enthusiasm in the population by telling them that Vishnu himself is going to do all the fighting.


By this time, Garuda (the real one, not the mechanical one) has tipped off Vishnu about what's going on, and cautioned him that if the fake Vishnu doesn't win the battle, the people of the kingdom will lose all faith in him. Vishnu doesn't want to see this happen, so on the battlefield he enters the weaver's body and annihilates the Chakravarti' s army. The entire army. Every single soldier. After this, the weaver marries the princess, everyone goes on worshiping Vishnu, and the king becomes the new Chakravarti.


The moral is that you should conduct your affairs in such a way that if you fail, it will lead to someone or something even bigger or more powerful failing too. This lets you get away with anything. The weaver got away with having sex with the princess on false pretenses (this is rape under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code), pretending to be a god (awesomely enough, this too is a criminal offense under Section 508), and annihilating an entire army that was fighting a just war - after all, it was the king who broke the treaty (you could make a case for this being genocide under Article 2 of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide).


American banks and financial institutions were very good at absorbing this lesson, and leveraged themselves up to such an extent that if they failed they would take the global economy down with them. And just as the weaver lived happily ever after with the princess, banks have lived happily ever after with taxpayer-funded bailouts.


But no matter how hard American investment banks try, Indians still remain the masters of this art. If the whole truth surrounding Lalit Modi is revealed, big politicians might be trapped. Modi is, thus, likely to get away lightly -- Another peson no need to mention - you already guessed it - A Raja, who might have given away spectrum at bargain basement rates, but whose sacking would lead to the government collapsing.

 

All this goes to show that no matter what the anguished elderly gentlemen who write letters to the editor feel, or post any any number of posting in your blog or group  Indians are still in touch with our ancient and glorious culture.

The real kinsman is one who  stand by us at the most difficult situations in life.  The situations may be when you are afflicted by serious illness, when you are deep sorrow for some reason,  when there is a great famine and food is scarce,  when strong enemies attack you,  when you are hauled up by the law enforcers to the kings court, and when your near relative or yourself are dead and taken to the burial ground

Relatives of all hues and colours throng your household when you have fame, health and wealth.  But you can expect only a few of them to come to your rescue when the times are unfavourable.  When you are ill you   may find a large number of people watching indifferently  when you are carried to the hospital, but the genuine relative will wait upon you and help in your treatment.
 When you are overcome by sorrow most of the pseudo relatives will simply avoid you. 
 If the region is visited  by a famine and food to share is at a premium, only the loving relative will have a mind to share whatever he has with you.
 Moreover, when you are attacked and abused by an enemy, most of the people around you will either remain passive onlookers or clear the field. Only the concerned relative will stand by you.
The worst situation in life is when you are caught up at the wrong side of the law and you are taken away be the law enforcers.  Here only the close relatives will stake their personal safety and will be of some help to you. 
The ultimate loss you can have is the death of a near relative and the occasiion of his burial can be most painful.  The dearest relatives will never fail to accompany you to the burial ground and console you and partake in your sorrow with full heart.

Marriage issues of H1B status Persons

Dear Fellow Brahmins:

Recently, in my  recurring search towards helping  Indian parents of boys and girls living in the U.S., in matrimony, I located a boy living  in Oregon and wrote to the boy's parents in Chennai suggesting an alliance with a girl who was also living  in the same State and  city.  The girl's Father living in Hyderabad had earlier welcomed my initiative and suggested  that I help his daughter too!  I knew girl (to be married) was a very good looking gal, there was Nakshtra Porutham between the boy and the girl and they were both not of the same Gotram;  I suspected the boy and the girl to be of the same age (since I was not privy to the boy's date of birth)!  There were all the makings in the proposed alliance of  an introduction between the boy and the girl, to take it to the next stage!  The girl was on a H1B visa transitioning to Green Card, unable to relocate to another city and State from Oregon until she got her GC which could take another 6-7 years if not longer and so was the case with the boy boy! 

Bang came the  reply from the boy's Mother, which in effect said:  We are Vadama Iyers, they are not! (the girl's parents were actually Madhwas).  That the girl was about the same age as the boy And they wanted a three  year age difference between the boy and the girl! And the whole prelude to introduction of the boy and girl was aborted without further consideration and adieu! by the Boy's Parents!

I wrote back to the boy's mother with my explanations and reasoning behind making this initial proposal towards matrimony!  Please read on:

Thank you very much for your email response.  I appreciate your reply.

Your second point first!  I had suspected that the boy and the girl would be of the same age (since I did not know your son's date of birth) but I have known of instances where Parents do make exceptions even if the girl is older than the boy by a few months -- even up to one year! in the interest of moving forward  with the marriage!  So I submitted this alliance for your consideration!

First point second, I had also known that you are Vadama Iyers and they are Madhwas but here again, many families in the U.S. that I know of, are seeking alliances between boys and girls born in the broad general category of "South Indian Brahmins"  Boys/Girls; hence I proceeded to submit the alliance for your consideration.

A third point that warranted my consideration of submittal of this alliance to you  was that there was Nakshthra Porutham between the boy and the girl and there was no Gotram conflict between the boy and the girl!

I would like to additionally submit following information for your kind consideration:

(a)   boys and girls living in the U.S. are locked into their jobs with H1B visas; several of them are transitioning from H1B into Green Card Status -- which can take up to next 10 years, if not longer,  to get the Green Card, depending on when one's application was filed!  Applicants who filed their Petitions for GC conversion within the last year year or two, can take up to 10-12 years before they actually get their Green Cards into their hands!  i.e., if the immigration rules do not change!

(b)  They (boys and girls) are unable to leave their jobs and move to another city and State with the marriage because the job situation is very tight. due to down turn in economy we are witnessing in the U.S. following the financial  collapse in October 2008! I  This makes it  twice as hard for boys and girls to leave ones' jobs and relocate with the marriage to another city and State, so most boys and girls (marriageable age) are stuck in their own cities and States and they will have to do so for another 8-10-12 years until they get their GCs, that is, of course, if they continue to have their jobs!
(c) If,  in the process of relocation, after their wedding, to another city and State to join their spouse,  should  one lose his/job  and don't  find another  one within 30 days and are unemployed for over 30 days, they face the prospect of violating the U.S. immigration laws and have to leave the country or convert  their H1B visa into a H4 (dependent visa) -- so it is tough situation for boys and girls;  this explains why one of the spouse cannot simply relocate to another city and State after the wedding!  It should have been a lot easier for these hard working boys and girls, but unfortunately, the Immigration Laws simply don't help H1B visa holders; and the employers (MNCs) are  very happy over this situation, because they have these employees over the barrel in holding onto their jobs!  They are getting  a very good quality, highly educated,  well qualified,  very dependable, slugging 70-80 hours a week, many of them under paid labor force, contributing to social security taxes to the U.S. Treasury, that many of them may never claim,  continuing in their jobs without interruption to their employers, working in a very critical environment, very loyally,  year after year after year!  And the MNCs love this situation and the workforce!  Where else are they going to get it from?!!

(d)  With the economic situation being as it is, many boys who are going to India to get married, are returning empty handed; the girls from India simply do not want to come to the U.S. with a marriage option,  as a dependent of H1B into a H4 classification and simply "sit on bench" in their homes in the U.S. upon arrival!  This is another reason why many girls from India are shedding U.S. employed boys in any category, H1B, GC (they cannot come here of course for another 25 years) and Citizens (it takes 1-2 years for the spouses to join their partner over here). Since educated SW girls are making INR 50-100K (if not more) every month in India and India is prospering economically, they are just not interested to come to the U.S. with a marriage option!

In the mean time, parents in India of boys and girls, living in the U.S. go through an agonizing hope against hope of getting their sons and daughters married,  somehow! This hope may be an unrealized dream for many in their life time!

I do, however,  sincerely respect you feelings about your wanting your son get married to a Vadama Boy but I would encourage you to strongly consider the situation facing your son in regard to Matrimony!  This is not an advice I am doling out but a very serious situation parents like you face  in your matrimonial search!  Unless, of course, it is the intent of your son to return to India  any time soon!

“There is a Thai saying that experience is a comb which Nature gives to man after he is bald.

 As I grow bald, I would like to share my comb with you.

 

1. Seek out grassroots level experience:

I studied Physics and Engineering at University. A few months before graduation, I appeared for an HLL interview for Computer Traineeship. When asked whether I would consider Marketing instead of Computers, I responded negatively : an engineer to visit grocery shops to sell Dalda or Lifebuoy? Gosh, no way. After I joined the Company and a couple of comfortable weeks in the swanky Head Office, I was given a train ticket to go to Nasik. Would I please meet Mr. Kelkar to whom I would be attached for the next two months? He would teach me to work as a salesman in his territory, which included staying in Kopargaon and Pimpalgaon among other small towns. I was most upset. In a town called Ozhar, I was moving around from shop to shop with a bullock cart full of products and a salesman's folder in my hand. Imagine my embarrassment when an IIT friend appeared in front of me in Ozhar, believe it or not! And exclaimed, "Gopal, I thought you joined as a Management Trainee in Computers". I could have died a thousand deaths. After this leveling experience, I was less embarrassed to work as a Dispatch Clerk in the Company Depot and an Invoice Clerk in the Accounts Department. Several years later, I realised the value of such grassroots level experience. It is fantastic. I would advise young people to seek out nail-dirtying, collar-soiling, shoe-wearing tasks. That is how you learn about organizations, about the true nature of work, and the dignity of the many, many tasks that go into building great enterprises.

 

2. Deserve before you desire

At one stage, I was appointed as the Brand Manager for Lifebuoy and Pears soap, the company's most popular-priced and most premium soaps. And what was a Brand Manager? "A mini-businessman, responsible for the production, sales and profits of the brand, accountable for its long-term growth, etc., etc. I had read those statements, I believed them and here I was, at 27,"in charge of everything". But very soon, I found I could not move a pin without checking with my seniors. One evening, after turning the Facit machine handle through various calculations, I sat in front of the Marketing Director. I expressed my frustration and gently asked whether I could not be given total charge. He smiled benignly and said, "The perception and reality are both right. You will get total charge when you know more about the brand than anyone else in this company about its formulation, the raw materials, the production costs, the consumer's perception, the distribution and so on. How long do you think that it will take?" "Maybe, ten years", I replied, "and I don't expect to be the Lifebuoy and Pears Brand Manager for so long"! And then suddenly, the lesson was clear. I was desiring total control, long before I deserved it. This happens to us all the time - in terms of responsibilities, in terms of postings and promotions, it happens all the time that there is a gap between our perception of what we deserve and the reality of what we get. It helps to deserve before we desire.

3. Play to win but win with fairness

Life is competitive and of course, you play to win. But think about the balance. Will you do anything, to win? Perhaps not. Think deeply about how and where you draw the line. Each person draws it differently, and in doing so, it helps to think about values. Winning without values provides dubious fulfillment. The leaders who have contributed the most are the ones with a set of universal values! V Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King for example. Napoleon inspired a ragged, mutinous and half-starved army to fight and seize power. This brought him name and fame for twenty years. But all the while, he was driven forward by a selfish and evil ambition, and not in pursuit of a great ideal. He finally fell because of his selfish ambition. I am fond of referring to the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Trophy. It was instituted in 1964 by the founder of the modern Olympic Games and here are two examples of winners. A Hungarian tennis player who pleaded with the umpire to give his opponent some more time to recover from a cramp. A British kayak team who were trailing the Danish kayak team. They then stopped to help the Danish team whose boat was stuck. The Danes went on to beat the British by one second in a three hour event! What wonderful examples of sportsmanship! Play to Win, but with Fairness.

4. Enjoy whatever you do

Sir Thomas Lipton is credited with the statement, "There is no greater fun than hard work". You usually excel in fields, which you truly enjoy. Ask any person what it is that interferes with his enjoyment of existence. He will say, "The struggle for life". What he probably means is the struggle for success. Unless a person has learnt what to do with success after getting it, the very achievement of it must lead him to unhappiness. Aristotle wrote, "Humans seek happiness as an end in itself, not as a means to something else". But if you think about it, we should not work for happiness. We should work as happy people. In organizational life, people get busy doing something to be happy. The more you try to be happy, the more unhappy you can get. Your work and career is all about you’re reaching your full potential. Working at one's full potential, whether it is the office boy or the Chairman, leads to enjoyment and fulfillment. A last point about enjoyment. Keep a sense of humor about yourself. Too many people are in danger of taking themselves far too seriously. As General Joe Stilwell is reported to have said, "Keep smiling. The higher the monkey climbs, the more you can see of his backside".

5. Be Passionate about your health

Of course, as you get older, you would have a slight paunch, graying of hair or loss of it and so on. But it is in the first 5 - 7 years after the working career begins that the greatest neglect of youthful health occurs. Sportsmen stop playing sports, non drinkers drink alcohol, light smokers smoke more, active people sit on chairs, and starving inmates of hostels eat rich food in good hotels and so on. These are the years to watch. Do not, I repeat do not, convince yourself that you are too busy, or that you do not have access to facilities, or worst of all, that you do this to relieve the stresses of a professional career. A professional career is indeed very stressful. There is only one person who can help you to cope with the tension, avoid the doctor's scalpel, and to feel good each morning - and that is yourself. God has given us as good a health as He has, a bit like a credit balance in the bank. Grow it, maintain it, but do not allow its value destruction. The penalty is very high in later years.

6. Direction is more important than distance

Every golfer tries to drive the ball to a very long distance. In the process, all sorts of mistakes occur because the game involves the masterly co-ordination of several movements simultaneously. The golf coach always advises that direction is more important than distance. So it is with life. Despite one's best attempts, there will be ups and downs. It is relationships and friendships that enable a person to navigate the choppy waters that the ship of life will encounter. When I was young, there was a memorable film by Frank Capra, starring James Stewart and Dona Reed, and named IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE. It is about a man who is about to commit suicide because he thinks he is a failure. An angel is sent to rescue him. The bottom line of the film is that "No Man is a Failure Who Has Friends".

 

Conclusion: My generation will never be twenty again, but when you are older, you can and should be different from my generation. Ours is a great and wonderful country, and realizing her true potential in the global arena depends ever so much on the quality and persistence of our young people. Nithyanand: Media has become the Judge and Prosecutor !!!!

Since day before yesterday, the media and large sections of the public is having a gala time over Swami Nithyananda’s bedroom antics with a Tamil actress. Everybody is outraged. “Shocked,” “devastated,” “how can he do this?” “betrayal of trust,” “Fake Gurus,” is the typical reaction from what we call the “layman.” But here’s the thing: he’ll probably be back and he’ll thrive even better in Round 2. However, for now, what was intended has been accomplished very well: manufacturing mob outrage using sleaze tactics.

It helps to answer a few questions at the outset:

Did Swami Nithyananda commit a crime by having sex with that woman?No. The video clearly shows it was consensual.

Are such Swamijis/Godmen “allowed” to have sex?
Yes unless they’ve explicitly, publicly declared that they are celibate and/or where they have prohibited their followers from having sex. In which case, it becomes a case of hypocrisy, double-standard and not really a crime. The operative word always is “consensual.”

Does Nithyananda’s act involve abuse of position and/or power?Going by this video, this is unclear, and really immaterial. Again, the woman wasn’t coerced into having sex with him.

Do reports of sandalwood illegally stocked at his ashram make him a criminal?They do but that is totally unrelated to him having sex with the actress.

So what or who is really wrong here?
Several answers but the most obvious one is buried beneath all the mudslinging happening: journalism of sleaze a.k.a invasion of privacy. The culprit of the whole episode is the TV Channel that carried out this rotten spycam operation.

But why is the public outrage focussed mostly on the Swami having sex with the actress?Because of what we have inherited as we shall see later.

Am I condoning Nithyananda’s romp caught on camera?
I leave that up your intelligence to figure out. 

But, the aftermath turned out as expected. The gleeful media readily extrapolated Nithyananda’s “immoral act” to brand Hinduism. If you’ve followed the case, the media has already passed its irrevocable judgement that Nithyananda is somehow a wrongdoer because he, a Godman, Guru, indulged in sex. That explains why the Congress News Network–Islamic News Network’s “show” is cunningly titled, “Sex, Sleaze and Swamis: Bhupendra Chaubey asks the panel what’s wrong with India’s holy community.” The Big Daddy of the Indian TV media, SpiNDTV, true to its name has wasted no time in slipping in its typical insinuation: “Bangalore godman: Modi a follower?” (I recommend looking at all the pictures in the SpinDTV picture gallery).

But the duplicity and innuendoes don’t end here. Now, a certain section of the media has appointed itself as the guardian of the “real” or “true” Hinduism. This section changes its tone and lingo to suit the occasion. It passionately hates the “goons” and “thugs” and “extremists” who besmear the fair name of the oh-so-all-encompassing Hinduism by wielding tridents, disrupting movies, Valentine’s Day, etc. Some of the more passionate protectors hailing from this section wax about “I don’t want MY Hinduism to become like an aggressive version of Islam.” Please note the special stress on MY. Others “defend” Hinduism by wailing like dogs in freezing winter nights about how “Pop Hinduism,” “Instant Gurus” have hijacked the “true essence” of Hinduism. Yet, these same Media Mullahs give space on their papers and Websites for the selfsame instant Gurus. However, their version of “true” Hinduism is this: a Zoo or Museum version of Hinduism at which you can throw fruits and nuts and watch the adherents take the bait and clap in glee, or worse, admire from a distance and gasp, “Ooh sooo esoteric!”

Truth is, both cases are different variation of the same despicable act of Hindu baiting by the Media Mullahs and assorted intellectuals who are bleeding our universities dry. For had they even the basic inkling of Sanatana Dharma, they’d know that nobody can proclaim himself or herself as a Guru. It is an honour that is bestowed upon a person after he/she passes the most stringent of spiritual and philosophical tests. This time-honoured tradition dates way back to Vedic seers right up to Ramana Maharshi. Guru literally means one who dispells darkness. In other words, he/she is one who has experienced philosophical enlightenment and he/she makes no claim that he/she has the ultimate key to the Truth. He/she doesn’t advertise his/her enlightenment but will accept disciples if they pass his/her test and vice versa. Unlike today’s Pop Gurus (for the record, I abhor them for the damage they do in the long run) who acquire a smattering of Yoga, Tantra (nothing to do with sex as is commonly misunderstood), meditation, ill-understood Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and a bastardized form of mysticism. However, if there’s a Pop Guru who has understood all these accurately and still goes about like a Nithyananda, he is a bigger charlatan.

Neither does our tradition prescribe celibacy for someone who is looked upon as a Guru. Majority of the ancient sages were married, had children and some even had more than one wife. Yet, why do we still revere a Vishwamitra who had numerous “affairs” and fathered many children? That’s because he gave us the most amazing Gayatri Mantra, which the same media–Slimes Music for example–makes tons of money out of. Which brings us to another instance of the media and academic ignoramuses who sit in the judge’s seat. There’s a wide gulf of difference between a Sanyasin and these self-styled Gurus. Celibacy among other things, is prescribed for a Sanyasin. Hindu tradition strictly condemns aSanyasin who, in the position of a Guru abandons celibacy. Strict punishment is prescribed for such Sanyasins and once he has abandoned his celibacy, he can no longer claim the right to be a Guru. Apart from this, the respect or devotion people have for someone in the position of a Guru doesn’t rest on whether he/she is celibate but what he/she brings for the world. So why was the public outraged when Nithyananda’s footage was aired?

The answer to that question lies in the colonized attitudes that continue to plague Indians: it shows we haven’t cast away the ugly Victorian morality. More accurately, it points to the hold both Islam and Christianity continue to have on the Hindu psyche. The same crowd that went berserk over Nithyananda’s romp video still flock to that charlatan couple, Kalki and Amma “Bhagavan” (sic), both married and who would’ve definitely had sex at least once. What explains this?

Back to the media, we wonder why no channel has ever planted a spycam inside the dark and holy halls and rooms of a Church or Cloister. Is it because perhaps the good Lord Sees All and needs no spycam? All exposes of the Father-Sister, Brother-Sister, Brother-Brother games that go on in those holy halls have seen light of the day because somebody from within revealed them to the world. And let’s not forget that these Brothers and Fathers have taken an oath of lifelong celibacy when they entered God’s Service. Let’s not even go near the Madrassas. Any spycams a la Nithyananda? Courageous Media, we’re waiting. Which brings us to the real issue in this whole affair de disgrace: invasion of privacy. But then sting ops are de rigeur in today’s TV journalism. It’s one thing to do a thorough, old-fashioned investigative journalism and another to put cameras into somebody’s bedroom to expose exactly…what?Interestingly, not one media house has questioned the TV channel for adopting Peeping Tom tactics to manufacture sensationalism out of nothing.

Additionally, the argument that Nithyananda broke the trust of millions of his followers is also bogus. A Pop Swami/Guru, Nithyananda, like others of his ilk, cleverly marketed his wares. Those who came into his fold have no right to complain for their own disillusionment. In the end, Swamis and Gurus like Nithyananda thrive because of the en masse loss of our traditional values. And it is equally also the reason why the media thrives in derogating Hinduism.

Naked Bharatmata - Hussain has shown naked woman with names of states written on different parts of her body. He has used Ashok Chakra, Tri-colour in the painting. By doing this he has violated laws and hurt National Pride of Indians. Both these things should be of grave concern of every Indian irrespective of his religion.

Out of four leaders M Gandhi is decapitated and Hitler is naked. Hussain hates Hitler and has said in an interview 8 yeares ago that he has depicted Hitler naked to humilate him and as he deserves it. How come Hitler's nudity cause humiliation when in Hussain's own statement nudity in art depicts purity and is in fact an honour. This shows Hussains's perversion and hypocrisy.
